In the world of medicine the EMT, otherwise known as an emergency medical technician, is the front line at the scene of an emergency. The EMT-Basic aids patients by giving first aid and basic life support at the scene, in the ambulance and during transport to the hospital. The EMT-B is the difference between life and death for many patients. Programs that train people to become and EMT in California are rapidly gaining popularity. A CA EMT-B career can be very rewarding. Emergency medical technicians help people and are the first line of medical assistants when there is a crisis. It is a fast paced and often action packed career. However, a CA EMT-Basic career is not for everyone. It takes a special type of person to be an EMT and to endure the training that is involved in embarking on a CA EMT-Basic career.
The EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification requires candidates to attend an appropriate, official emergency medical technician training program and pass two exams: one theoretical and one practical examination. Candidates to the EMT certification can enroll in training programs anywhere across the country, and can choose among a wide range of specialized, accredited EMT training-offering educational institutions. However, the duration and the exact type of emergency medical technician training program required for obtaining the EMT certification are decided by each State individually. Apart from these aspects, each State respects a series of specific protocols and procedures regarding both the structure of the emergency medical technician training program and final examinations.
Concerning refibrillation, Stults and Brown carried out a research and 271 cases in ventricular fibrillation were studied. These 271 patients were assisted by EMT-Ds without being supported by paramedics. The EMTs succeeded to render the heart rhythm to normal for 111 patients. 19 (17%) of the 271 patients refibrillated before the arrival at the hospital, and 11 out of the 19 were brought back to having normal cardiac rhythm. For the 111 patients that were rehabilitated, the admission rates were 53%. This is a low number compared to the 73% admission rate for the patients who did not refibrillate. The discharge rates were almost similar 37% for those who refibrillated and 35% for those who did not.
